Resumen

This study aimed to investigate the difficulties encountered by students in the process of teaching learning that trigger a low school performance in the discipline of mathematics in elementary school. The research was carried out in a school of the municipal education network located in the south of Espírito Santo and had as subjects: students, pedagogical team and teachers of the referred stage of basic education. The type of research carried out was a case study, assuming a qualitative approach to data analysis. The instruments of data collection were: documentary analysis, participant observation and interviews with semi-structured scripts with mathematics teachers, pedagogical staff and students. The main theoretical references are: Patto (2015); Saviani (1987) and Lorenzato (2006). The results obtained allowed us to identify that the indifference to the mathematical contents, the feeling of incapacity and lack of habit of studying at home of the students, as well as the teaching methodology used collaborate for the poor performance of the students in mathematics.
