Resumen

The climate changes that swept the world in recent decades have alerted the entire scientific community, increasing considerably the number of studies in search of solutions to environmental problems. Since the 1970s, there have been discussions around the world about environmental education, becoming an alternative to sensitize the new generations on the importance of human-environment interaction. The need to reformulate the educational system is therefore essential, thinking of new pedagogical practices that promote responsible citizens and aware of their role and place in the world. It is in the school environment that future citizens receive the first stimuli to raise awareness about the environment. Promoting the contact of the school community with a green space and stimulating teamwork among students, promoting understanding of environmental education is of paramount importance to sensitize students and the community to environmental issues. The implementation of the school garden was an efficient and effective strategy to promote environmental education. Students have learned the importance of living harmoniously with the environment is one of the roles that must be played by the school. Developing this skill in students is critical to empowering citizens who are aware that natural resources can be degraded or depleted. In this respect, the survival of society will depend on the cultural, social and ecological literacy of the population.
